With Unlock 1.0, Traffic Congestion returns to Guwahati

One major reason for traffic congestion is that most of the vehicles in the city do not follow the lane driving discipline

Guwahati: With Unlock 1.0 being in place and novel coronavirus (COVID-19) cases increasing day by day, the traffic scenario in Guwahati seems to be resuming with massive congestion just like the pre-lockdown period.

The city has been witnessing severe traffic congestions in several places in the city and one major reason behind this can be termed as ‘irresponsible driving’ by commuters. It is often seen that people in the city are not even aware of what the basic traffic rules are.

One major reason for traffic congestion is that most of the vehicles in the city do not follow the lane driving rules and end up violating the one of the most important rules which is as mandatory as wearing seat belts and helmets.

To control traffic congestions, Guwahati Traffic Police might soon announce real-time traffic updates in the city on the radio to facilitate commuters an easy way to plan their journey.

Mayank Kumar Jha, DCP-Traffic, Guwahati said that the traffic branch might soon take initiatives to make radio announcements about the real-time traffic updates in Guwahati so that people remain update of the regular traffic scenario. This will help daily commuters to know about the routes that might be under congestion or that might be closed due to various reasons and help them to plan their journey accordingly.

“We are taking several measures in the city to maintain traffic congestions. We have taken initiatives to stop people from parking their vehicles on service lanes of flyovers as well”, he added.

He added, “Since most commuters listen to radio during their journeys and it with radio announcements it will be an easier thing to manage the traffic issues in the city as people will be aware.”

On the roads, drivers are supposed overtake vehicles from the rightmost lanes in India. This is because it will reduce the risk of the overtaking vehicle not being seen and prevent the chances of any accidents while overtaking. Also, vehicles which are supposed to move fast are to hold on to the rightmost lane but it is merely seen in Guwahati as well as entire Assam. No such rule is maintained by most people.

These issues create one of the most serious issues which is traffic congestions. Due to failed lane rules or disciplines in the state, the roads witness massive amount of traffic congestions each day and no one is yet seen to be taking the responsibility.

With Unlock 1.0 the issue of traffic congestion seems to be taking place once again in the city.

To control this issue, the traffic branch had taken several initiatives there were no reports of any person being fined or prosecuted for violating lane disciplines. It needs to be mentioned that most accidents are caused due to irresponsible lane changes by drivers.
