Woman beaten-up in another Moral Policing incident in Garo Hills

Guwahati, April 16: In yet another case of moral policing after the incident that took place in the Baxar district of Assam, a woman was both physically and mentally tortured by a group of miscreants at West Garo Hills district, whose video was circulated on social media.

As per reports, a video was circulated on social media whereby a woman, who was enjoying a picnic with her friends in the Mronggre-Bikpnggre area, was seen brutally assaulted by a group of ‘moral police.’

The video was allegedly taken near the village of Chibinang under Phulbari Police Station in West Garo Hills. Also, this incident occurred in the presence of a huge gathering of people where most of them witnessed the entire episode either as passive onlookers or joined in with the accused in assaulting the woman.

Although a suo moto FIR has been filed by the police registered at the Phulbari Police Station, the victim, who hails from South West Garo Hills (SWGH), is yet lodged an FIR.

Reports also state that the victim was held and thrashed by the group of ‘moral police’ while falsely accusing her of engaging herself in some illicit activities, and was thereby violently kicked by them.

The main accused have been identified as Biren Sangma and Martin B Sangma, both of whom are local youths. While Biren has been arrested by the police, Martin S Sangma has escaped.

Following the video, which went viral on social media, there has been an urgent call to take immediate measures against the same.

It may be mentioned that in another such case of ‘moral policing’ was witnessed in Assam in the district of Baxar on April 12 wherein a woman was reportedly stipped off and beaten up over her alleged affair with another man.
