In his first rally since the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) protests broke out in Assam, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on December 28th, 2019 said that neither the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nor the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) will be allowed to alter the identity of the state, country.
Accusing the BJP of spreading hatred, Gandhi said that Assam might return to the path of violence because of the government’s policies at the Centre and in the state.
“Assam is returning to the path of violence due to the policies of BJP governments. The people of the state must unite against the hatred spread by the BJP,” he said while speaking at the Congress’ ‘Save Constitution-Save India’ rally at Khanapara in Guwahati.
He added, “The BJP and the RSS will not be allowed to attack the culture, language and identity of Assam and the Northeast. Assam will not be run by Nagpur. The state will be run by its people. The spirit of Assam Accord which brought in peace should not be ruined. The Congress party will always stand with the people of the state.”
Tens of thousands of people showed up at Khanapara Veterinary College playground in Guwahati to listen to former Congress president.
Congress activists from across the state had started arriving in the city from mid-morning to attend the Congress rally. Almost all the top-rung leaders of the Congress party in the State also participated in the rally.
The Congress leader also said that Assam can never progress with hatred and violence. “In Assam and in other states, the youths are protesting. Why do you (BJP) have to shoot and kill them? The people of the state has to come together and show the BJP leaders that they cannot attack the culture, language, identity and history of the state,” he said.
He, along with other Assam Congress leaders, also met the family members of 17-year-old Sam Stafford, who succumbed to bullet injuries during the anti-CAA protests in Guwahati on December 12th, 2019.
Gandhi also vehemently slammed Modi for “destroying the economy of India” by bringing in demonetisation and GST.
“Modi doesn’t say a word about this. His job is only to divide the people of India and spread hatred,” he added.
