Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said that youths of the state are joining the banned ULFA-I due to a lack of employment opportunities, whereas, in the 90s people joined the organization for the sake of Assam.
The reaction came after a young college girl from Amguri in the Sivasagar district was suspected to have joined proscribed ULFA(I) recently. The girl was reported missing for the last three days.
While interacting with the media in New Delhi, CM Sarma said, “Presently, the youths join proscribed outfits like ULFA (I) due to lack of unemployment opportunities. There are many youths who are also willing to return to mainstream society. We won’t name them as they will get targeted. There is a huge difference between people joining the ULFA in the 90s to the present day. Once people joined the banned the ULFA for the sake of Assam or the community, whether their path was right or wrong, I am not going to comment on that. But, nowadays, youths are joining the banned ULFA-I for their own self-fulfillment, they are cowards, hence, they ran away leaving behind their parents, pregnant wives at home.”
Meanwhile, Assam DGP, Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta reacting to the issue had claimed that there is nothing new about the fact that many youths do join the proscribe ULFA(I). “In the last 20 to 22 years, several youths join the banned ULFA (I). Likewise, many youths have also returned back to the mainstream society, this goes one,” said the Assam police chief.
