Singing sensation Zubeen Garg and his wife Garima Garg on December 6th, 2019 joined the students of the Cotton University (CU) in opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in Guwahati.
The students’ union and alumni association of the premier educational institute of the state have decided to ban the entry of members of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh supporting the Bill into the varsity.
A few days back, the students of Cotton University had pasted handmade posters against the Bill in the campus.
The Bill which got Union Cabinet’s nod on December 4th, 2019 will be tabled in the Lok Sabha on December 9th, 2019. The move has however upset the people along with the opposition and students’ bodies as they continue to show their resentment against the Bill.
The Bill seeks to grant Indian citizenship to the people belonging to the Hindus, Jains, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Parsis who have become the victims of religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan and entered India.
Earlier this year, Zubeen had written to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal over the Bill and demanded that the votes the BJP got using an election song sung by him in 2016 be “returned”. In a Facebook post, the singer also offered to return the remuneration received for the song.
